Planning your Baby’s first Christmas
‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’ – with Christmas just 3 weeks away, I can’t help but feel excitement for our first Christmas as a family of 3 (or 5, not forgetting the fur babies!). A Baby’s first Christmas isn’t just a wonderful time for parents, but Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and close friends too. After all, Christmas is all about spending quality time with family & friends, and reflection on the past year. Not only this – but there are some super cute festive baby attire out there this year!
Whether you have a toddler who’s into everything, a tiny baby fascinated by the flashing lights or a little one who is excited by the magic of Christmas, the festive season is a time for making memories for all.
On top of all this, Christmas doesn’t have to be a time for breaking the bank – here’s some ideas on homemade and easy Christmas present ideas for your little ones – as well as keepsakes to remember each year by.
Christmas Treasure Baskets
As an experienced nursery practitioner, ‘treasure baskets’ are a must in our house – full of everyday items, Babies are bound to want to explore the characteristics and textures of the items in these special baskets – especially if you have a little one who’s constantly emptying the cupboards! Why not add some Christmas items to your treasure baskets, allowing your baby to explore Christmas with all of their senses – include baubles, some shiny beads, tinsel etc. Why not add cinnamon sticks and dried oranges for a lovely smelling treasure too – simply putting some bells in a plastic bottle can make a fantastic musical instrument with a jingle bell theme!
Please remember, treasure basket play should be supervised by an adult at all times. These can make a wonderful present with hours of open ended play.
Whilst your baby may not be able to remember their first few Christmas’s, parents and family will want to remember them. Using your child’s tiny feet or hands to create simple decorations or cards as gifts can be worth as much to someone as splashing out on huge presents.
What to buy your baby for Christmas?
If I’m being honest I’ve been thinking about this for the past few months, I don’t want to buy lots of toys etc for my baby’s first Christmas, so instead have decided to buy him things he needs or will use for many years to come these include;
• muslin blankets and soothers – my baby loves to snuggle up to these so we never have too many! I love the Aden + Anais Musy Mate, as it’s not only a soft blanket but has the added extra of a cute character for the baby to hold on to too!
• teethers – Jesse has recently started chewing everything, and I can see a few little teeth starting to come in his gums, so I’ve brought him a teether you for Christmas too! Matchstick Monkeys are fantastic for being easy for your little one to grip and have a chew on!
• We’ve also brought Jesse a few musical instruments, including some little pots and pans, when he’s older he’ll be able to use them for role play too!
Other than this, we will put some money aside for a family day out to enjoy in the New Year. However you spend your Christmas – I hope it’s one to remember and you all have a lovely festive time.
